Building community: The value of the local at Casa Carolina

July 27, 2025

At Casa Carolina, we believe that travel can be a transformative experience, not only for those who travel but also for the communities that make it possible. That’s why, beyond offering a delightful stay in the heart of Cartagena, we work daily to build genuine, sustainable, and respectful relationships with the communities around us.

Our commitment goes beyond aesthetics or experiences. We are driven by a philosophy of conscious hospitality, where every decision, every partnership, and every gesture seeks to add value to the local community, protect cultural heritage, and strengthen social bonds. Along this path, we have found two great allies who inspire us and challenge us to be better: Asocoman and the Granitos de Paz Foundation.

Building community: The value of the local at Casa Carolina

Asocoman: Women Who Uphold the Soul of the Caribbean

Asocoman (Asociación de Mujeres del Carmen de Bolívar) is an organization born from pain and hope. Composed of women displaced by the armed conflict, it has become a living example of resilience, collective work, and empowerment through culinary arts. Its headquarters, located in the traditional Santa Rita neighborhood of Cartagena, is a place where the kitchen becomes a vehicle for storytelling, preserving ancestral knowledge, and generating economic autonomy.

At Casa Carolina, we firmly believe in the strength of these women and their capacity to inspire. That’s why we work with them to promote their products, create opportunities for mutual learning, and build bridges between our guests and the traditional cooks who proudly represent one of the most authentic roots of Caribbean gastronomy.

Through workshops, gatherings, and tastings organized jointly, our visitors can not only savor unique dishes but also understand the deep social fabric behind each recipe. What might seem like a simple “traditional dish” to many is, for these women, an act of remembrance, a form of resistance, and a path toward self-sufficiency.

Granitos de Paz Foundation: Transforming Territories with Dignity

On the other hand, the Granitos de Paz Foundation reminds us that true change begins at home, in the neighborhood, in everyday life. Since 2005, this non-profit organization has positively impacted thousands of families in traditionally marginalized areas of Cartagena, especially in the El Pozón neighborhood.

Its comprehensive approach, encompassing education, health, entrepreneurship, housing, and culture, has enabled entire communities to transform their living conditions in a sustainable and dignified way. Through community development programs, urban gardens, medical brigades, and workshops for young people, the foundation promotes a vision of the future based on empowerment and the active participation of residents.

At Casa Carolina, we deeply identify with this vision. That’s why we have begun actively collaborating with the foundation, supporting educational initiatives and creating opportunities to raise awareness of its projects. We understand that being a responsible tourism player means taking an active role in building a more just, equitable Cartagena, one that is more connected to its people.

Travel with purpose

Travel doesn’t have to be a superficial experience. Every consumption decision, every place we choose to visit, and every story we decide to listen to can make a difference. At Casa Carolina, we invite our guests to go beyond traditional tourism and discover a vibrant, authentic, and deeply human Cartagena.

Whether through a dinner prepared with ingredients from local producers, a culinary tour led by women from Asocoman, a visit to a community project by the Granitos de Paz Foundation, or simply a conversation with someone from the neighborhood, we want everyone who stays at our house to take away much more than a pretty picture: a real connection with the place.

Our commitment: regenerative tourism

The tourism of the future and the present is regenerative. That is, it not only seeks to minimize its negative impact but also to leave the place better than it found it. At Casa Carolina, we embrace this vision: one where beauty is not only visual, but also ethical and social.

We will continue to build networks, forge alliances, and learn from those who have been transforming Cartagena for years from within their own communities. Because we deeply believe that the local is not just a detail; it is the heart of everything.
