Caring for what cares for us: Casa Carolina’s commitment to Cartagena’s heritage
July 27, 2025
Cartagena wouldn’t be Cartagena without its walls, its tiled roofs, its hidden courtyards, and its centuries-old architecture. Walking through the Historic Center is like listening to a living history that withstands the test of time. At Casa Carolina, we don’t just inhabit that history: we honor and cherish it.
From day one, we assumed a clear responsibility: to preserve the architectural heritage that surrounds us and gives this place its soul. Because we are not strangers to its walls: we are part of them. And because we believe that caring for heritage is not a task of the past, but a commitment to the future.
A house with centuries of history
Before becoming a hotel, Casa Carolina was a colonial mansion with over 400 years of history. Restoring it was a long, delicate, and deeply respectful process. We didn’t just want to restore its original beauty: we wanted to understand it, protect it, and sensitively adapt it to the needs of the present.
The wood, coral stone, arches, columns, floors, and inner courtyards were treated as unique pieces. Each intervention was guided by conservation experts, always with the same objective: to intervene as little as possible and preserve as much as possible.

Technology at the Service of History
Our commitment to heritage goes beyond aesthetics. Today, thanks to a partnership with the Santa María Foundation of Spain, Casa Carolina becomes the first hotel in Cartagena to install structural and environmental monitoring sensors that allow us to actively protect our walls from invisible but constant threats, such as urban noise and vibrations.
These sensors, unique in the city, are the same ones that have been installed in the Cartagena Cathedral. They are designed to measure, in real time, the levels of sound, vibration, and pressure that impact heritage structures. This allows us to anticipate potential damage, better understand the building’s behavior, and make informed decisions that protect its integrity.
It is cutting-edge technology, applied with awareness. Because we believe that heritage preservation can and should also engage with innovation.
Cartagena Protects Itself from Within
Cartagena faces many challenges today: mass tourism, excessive noise, and urban development pressure. In this context, our duty is even greater. That is why, at Casa Carolina, we don’t just do what is necessary: we do everything possible.
We limit the use of amplified sound, train our team in responsible conservation practices, work with heritage architects for any structural improvements, and are in constant dialogue with other entities that share this purpose. Because we understand that preserving Cartagena is a collective task.
Caring is also educating.
Part of our mission is that every person who visits us leaves not only with a relaxing experience, but also with a seed of awareness. That’s why we openly share our history, explain the value of every architectural detail, and tell how, behind the visible beauty, there is a silent work of protection and restoration.
We want our guests to marvel at the high ceilings, the hydraulic tile floors, and the thick walls… but also to understand why they still stand. Because you only take good care of what you value.
Heritage lived with respect.
At Casa Carolina, we don’t see heritage as a postcard: we live it, we feel it, and we defend it. We believe Cartagena deserves more conscious tourism, one that recognizes the privilege of staying within an architectural and cultural gem.
Every brick of this house has withstood centuries of history. The least we can do is listen to it, protect it, and keep it alive so that many more can experience it.
If you choose to stay with us, you are also choosing to be part of that commitment.
